August 2014

Our flight arrived at Gate 6, the closest to the terminal.

And right next door to the contract Lotus Lounge, a Priority Pass lounge.  Since my last shower was the day earlier in London, I decided to freshen up and shower. I had been here before but never for a shower.

Showers come in all sizes but this one had to be smallest and most rustic lounge shower I've ever experienced.  No sink, no toilet, no room for anything except a shower.  Indeed, after the shower, I moved to the men's lav to shave and change clothes.

An outstanding serve yourself food and beverage spread.

And comfortable but dated seating areas.

Back in the concourse, I stopped at the transit desk to get my boarding pass for this evening's CMB-MLE flight before clearing immigration and heading toward the exit and my driver/guide for the day, past an array of duty-free appliance shops.  I guess it's a popular thing for locals when they return.

I met my driver/guide Suresh at 9AM in the general airport meeting area just outside of bagge claim.   And we're off for a 7 hour whirlwind tour or Colombo and Galle.  First stop was Colombo, population of approximately 1 million and the largest city in Sri Lanka.

The new Parliament Building...

The ever so humble President of Sri Lanka, his mug shot on almost everything in town.  Apparently, he has well earned nickname of "Mr. 10 percent".

Mr. 10 Percent's residence.

Major new hotel construction going on in town.

Up next, much more attractive Galle.

OK, I've been to a lot of airports around the world.  But CMB entrance and check-in has to rank right up there on the most disorganized airport lists.

No less than two security checks before you even get to check-in.   After you show your ticket or boarding pass (or buy an airport entrance ticket... I kid you not) you enter a pleasant concourse...

That leads to a chaotic pre-check-in area.   And a queue and security check to enter the check-in area.

Since I already had my CMB-MLE boarding pass from earlier in the day, I bypassed the counters and went thru a third security check to get to passport control.  And finally to the Serendib Lounge.

Open less than a year ago, it is a pleasant lounge with good food and drink options.  But lounge dragons have pretty limited authority to do much of anything, other than check member credentials.  A last minute equipment swap meant two class service instead of the original single class.  Buy ups were available and I decided to pop for the US$150 upgrade fee.  The only problem was the only place I could pay for the upgrade was.... back downstairs at cashier desk at check-in.  Oy.  After telling the agent to forget it, she insisted that another (very attractive) agent escort me back downstairs (by passport control with a wave) to buy my upgrade.  Seriously?  So I played along more out of morbid curiosity over how ridiculously inefficient a One World airline could possibly be in 2014.  Twenty minutes later and $146 (after exchange) lighter, I was back in the lounge awaiting my MLE flight.  Most of these pics are from the next morning (long story) when there were no pax in the lounge.

\

The best I could do of my lovely "escort" that took me downstairs and back to process my upgrade.

At around 45 minutes prior to departure, I headed out to Gate 14, the last gate on the concourse.  And the 4th security check of the afternoon a two gate combined thing.  Jeez.

Priority Boarding for J pax, that would be just me.

Nice J cabin, comfy seats.

What's not to like about the UL uniforms?

After take-off, the galley curtain is drawn.

Today's menu...

Service seemed a little rushed for only 2 pax, as my drink was delivered with my dinner tray.

I opted for the Sri Lankan style Curry Prawns.   Wow, spicey!

Seatback IFE with a limited selection of movies.

And our approach to Male.  A short 65 minute flight.

To the left side as you enter the arrivals halls is the Transit area, with a security person who alerted an airport staffer that I was in transit but needed a boarding pass.

Although I had checked in online for my CX flight, I was not given the option of printing my boarding passes.  And I completely struck out at CMB as neither the SrlLankan Transit Desk agent or the Serendib lounge staff could print my CX boarding passes.  I handed my passport and itinerary to the airport staffer.  She returned 10 minutes later with my CX boarding passes and escorted me upstairs to the Leeli Lounge.  So far so good... I was in the lounge by 8PM and the inbound CX 333 was on time.  Time for a tour of the lounge.

And the shopping and food court outside the lounge.

At around T-45, I headed to Gate 4 to wait to board.

Friendly gate staff checked my BP and I found a seat to wait the boarding call.   The first sign of trouble was that the flight crew was sitting in the lounge as well, at around T-40.  Uh, shouldn't you guys be on board?  At around T-30, the Captain and FO went down the stairs to the plane, came back a couple minutes later and sat down.  I went over to them, excused myself, and asked if there was a problem tonight.  Pleasant Captain told me that they were waiting for word on a mechanical issue.  Gate agent suggested that I go back to the lounge and she would call when we were ready to board.

Back at the lounge, I started trying to look for options... just in case.   Unfortunately, wIth a full lounge from other flights, internet service had slowed to a crawl.    A half hour later, I walked back towards the gate only to see the fight crew walking my way down the concourse from the gate.  The Captain told me that they still waiting for diagnosis and were all going to eat at Burger King.   OK, this is not looking good.  About 45 minutes later or  just after midnight, the local CX station manager came into the lounge and announced that the flight had been cancelled, that CX was flying in a replacement plane which he estimated would let us depart at 9:00AM later that morning.  He informed us the CX had made arrangements for all passengers to stay overnight at a "5 star beach resort" and CX was working on alternate flight connections from HKG.  He asked us all to clear immigration, collect bags and proceed to the dock where boats would be waiting to take us to the resort.  I reviewed the math and decided that none of this made any sense.  There is no way that a replacement plane was going to arrive and then leave by 9AM.  And what kind of a replacement was going to show up?  And even if it did, how much sleep is anyone going to get tonight?  We'd be lucky to get the hotel by 2AM only to have to return at 6AM.  I don't think so.  Since I was on a refundable ticket I decided to go it alone, and just go the UL counter and buy a ticket on the 2:45AM flight back to CMB connecting to SIN, where there were SQ First Class Saver mileage seats available later that afternoon on SQ2 to SFO.  Of all the possible options, it was the only way to get back to the US by that evening.

So I headed to immigration where naturally I was denied entry to Maldives because... I was a transit passenger.  OK, this just gets better and better.  Fortunately, the CX manager had just arrived in the immigration area.  I explained my dilemma and he immediately asked a CX agent to escort me back to the lounge and to work with me on options to get me out ASAP.  Fortunately, I was one of only two passengers that decided not to overnight and proactively try to get out of Dodge.  For the next 90 minutes, terrific CX agent Shuha worked with me and explored all options.  Never was EF a better investment as I was able to show her all the options.  We finally settled on MLE-CMB-SIN on UL in Business connecting to SQ2 SIN-SFO in First.   She left to work out the details with UL and SQ.  Shuha came back 20 minutes later with the bad news that they couldn't confirm SIN-SFO because the SQ office they needed to reach was "closed until morning".   Argh. Seriously? This is like a bad movie.  Once she confirmed that UL could indeed get me to SIN, I then booked the SIN-SFO SQ Saver First seat online at SQ.com while Shuha watched so I could give her the PNR and UL could issue the ticket knowing that I had a confirmed ticket out of SIN.  I also gave her my Amex card and told her if was easier, just buy the UL ticket with it.    At his point it was approaching T-60 to my UL flight.  She returned at T-30 with my boarding passes and credit card, which she didn't need since CX apparently bought my MLE-SIN ticket.  Good to go?  Uh, no fast.  We first had to go to passport control where I had to officially leave the country, since apparently in order to issue the ticket, my passport had entered the country.  OMG.  We finallly arrived at Gate 1 at T-20 where there was still more drama.  Shuha had to write a manual voucher to cover the CMB-SIN ticket since the CX ticket was not showing up on the boarding pass or in UL's system.  At T-10, all systems were go and I bid adieu and a major thank you to Shuha.  I was the last person to board and the door was shut.   Truth be told, I enjoy the challenges of IRROPS, but this was too much even for me.

I was so exhausted from whole IRROPS ordeal that I fell asleep the moment we were in the air and didn't wake up until our descent.
Amazingly, UL served a full meal if one wanted.  Here is menu.

And a couple of cabin pics.

For whatever reason, we parked at a remote gate and were bused to the terminal... where a separate shuttle bus drove just the three J pax to terminal long before the second bus, crammed with Y pax made it's way to the terminal.

On arrival at the bus gates located a floor below the Serendib Lounge, I took the escalator upstairs to an empty Serenbib Lounge where I showered and passed the time until I head to the gate for my CMB-SIN flight.

Comfortable but pretty dated old A330 cabin.  Only two other J pax made this another charter like flight.  Great crew and doting service made it very enjoyable.

My omelet was very good.

After breakfast, I reclined the seat next door and slept for at least two hours, as the FAs closed the cabin shades.

Our approach to Singapore.

Just as the afternoon rain hit the airport.

Another excellent SriLankan flight, my fifth UL flight in the past 8 months.

With nearly 4 hours until my 6:30PM SQ2 departure, I enjoyed the long walk to other side of beautiful Terminal 3.

After a pleasant 20 minute stroll thru Terminal 3, I headed upstairs to the SilverKris lounges and the Private Room.  After I identified my self and indicated that I needed to check-in and get a boarding pass for SQ2, I was escorted around the corner to an agent who checked my passport, issued my boarding pass and then escorted me back to the Private Room.  Ah yes, it's been too long.

After I caught up on work with the first Wifi in three days that was actually reliable, I headed over to the Private Room Dining Room for a bite.

The sautéed lobster with linguini was fabulous, sort of a lobster thermidor with linguine.

And a look at the serve yourself options that vary depending on the time of day.

Hey, a text message from CX confirming that I made a wise decision to get out of MLE.  New departure time is now tomorrow morning, 32+ hours late.  "Sorry for the inconvenience"  LOL.

I decided to tour the rest of the SKL including the basic First Class Lounge, presumably for non-SQ *A First class pax.

At around T-50, I headed over to our gate, to start get a little closer to home.

The usual gate security clearance at SIN.

Boarding began at around T-30 with 1L reserved for First and Business Class.

Despite what the SKL agent had told me, it was Old First today... still comfy but I'd like to try SQ's New First.

And my vote for the most elegant galley, lav 1L area in the sky.

Ah yes... all is well.  A long way from MLE.

After take-off, purser Desmond and his outstading crew went to work in a full 8/8 F cabin.  My usual G&T.

Today's menu.  Since I had booked within 24 hours I was unable to Book-The-Cook.  So wanted the Chicken Rice.  Alas, not on the menu today.

Other then champagne, SQ needs help with wines.  Trefethen?? Seriously.  Even QR Business Class has a better wine list.

Showtime.

The ribs tasted much better than they looked.

Our approach to HKG.

We pulled into Gate 34, an unusual gate for SQ.  But likely temporary since the HKG SKL is under renovation.
