Cape Town and the Cape Winelands

Cape Town and the Cape Winelands

via Emirates A380 First Class

March 2015

The One&Only has a great location at the entrance to The Waterfront, Cape Town's exciting entertainment, restaurant, bar and shopping area.

The beautiful lobby bar with amazing views of Table Mountain.

Time to check out our room...

Which was a very pleasant Table Mountain view room.

Good thing we didn't want to spend any lounge time out here. That's pretty disgusting.

Exploring the rest of the hotel grounds.

And the lovely pool, which we never got around to using.

Mrs. SFO's goal is to eat at every Nobu on the planet. I believe this is number 6 and unfortunately, the weakest so far. Still good food, but not great.

Ambiance a bit of a meh.

Dessert as always was great.

Our Nobu favorite mochi ice cream was not on the menu. It had only recently been brought to the Cape Town restaurant and apparently not ready to be added to the menu. But, the kitchen let us sample. Close, but still needs a little work.

The view from our room at night.

Next morning, we had breakfast at Reuben's, the Cape Town outlet of the Franschooek original. Nice room and location, formerly occupied by Gordon Ramsay before he lost his way in the kitchen and became a TV star.

Our guide Dave met us just before 8AM and we headed out to make sure we got good seats on the 1st ferry of the day to Robben Island, the former maximum security prison, where Nelson Mandela spent many years. A little overcast at first this morning, but the clouds quickly dissipated.

Our rather old and slow ferry, the Nauticat.  In port today, the cruise ship The World.

Heading out for the 45 minute trip to Robben Island.

With wonderful views back to Cape Town and Table Mountain.

Approaching Robben Island.

The quarry where prisoners were forced to work.

The view back to Cape Town.

And the prison itself.

With a former political prisoner giving a tour and talking about life in the prison.

Mandela's cell.

Our return ferry left at 12:30P and arrived back at the dock some 45 minutes later.

We headed over to where the action is for lunch.

And the excellent Harbour House Restaurant.

Then back to the hotel to rest up before our 9PM dinner at Aubergine.

Aubergine: Great atmosphere, great food and wine.

We had a drink at the bar waiting for our table and had a pleasant conversation with a regular who was having dinner at the bar.

Our salmon amuse bouche.

An outstanding wine list and yet another great SA wine recommended by the sommelier.

Mrs. SFO's salad starter.

My Curry Cape Seafood Chowder was excellent.

We both had the sensational lobster special.

And a fabulous Chocolate Fondant.

We enjoyed ourselves at Aubergine, so much so that we were the last ones to leave.

After our psycho taxi driver on the way over, we opted for Uber on the way back to the hotel.
Great car and great driver, for all of US$6.51 and double MR points!

Another beautiful day in Cape Town and this morning we are off for a private helicopter flight of the Cape Peninsula including Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope. A Cape Town Helicopters shuttle bus picked us up and the hotel and dropped us off at the Waterfront helipad office a few minutes later.

After a brief safety video, we were escorted to our beautiful Bell JetRanger and met our pilot Elle.

A few minutes later, we lifted off for a wonderful 45 minute tour of the gorgeous Cape Peninsula.

Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope.

Looking back towards Cape Town as we start the return portion of our flight.

Descending toward The Waterfront.

And our approach and perfect landing.

What an amazing experience.

From the helipad, we were shuttled back to The Waterfront.

To first check out the shopping centre.

And the Cape Wheel.

Even got the "Pensioner's" discount. LOL.

We then started heading back to the hotel...

... hhen Mrs. SFO suggested a Hop On Hop Off bus tour. Hey, why not? We chose the 90 minute Table Mountain/Beach tour. HOHO is a great and informative way to see a city's highlights, especially on a beautiful day like today.

We first toured the city centre and then headed up to Table Mountain.

To the Table Mountain gondola base.

And then down to the tony beach communities.

And finally back towards the Waterfront.

And an open air concert.

A bite to eat and finally back to the One&Only for a nap.

Next up: The long and winding road home.

Getaway day was another simply gorgeous morning in Cape Town with not a cloud in the sky.

Our Emirates driver was waiting for us at our pre-reserved 10:30AM pick up time. With no traffic this morning, we were at CPT about 20 minutes later.

After we passed the body temp scan, we proceeded to check-in counter.

No priority security at CPT, but the lines were light and we were thru within 10 minutes. The deserted walkway to the international gates.

Another 10 minutes at passport control and we were in the departures area and in front of the Bidvest "Premier Lounge", contract Business Class lounge for almost every airline, bank and lounge pass company under the sun.

I guess the good news is that there is a lounge. But one of the saddest excuses for a lounge since we left the US. But pretty nice compared to your average United Club.

The food spread.

OK, now that's scary looking.

View of the gate area from the lounge.

And the cleaning crew ready to board the inbound.

At around T-45 we headed down the gate area. And by now the usual Emirates non-First Class boarding as we are lumped together with Business Class and Platinum, Gold and even Silver EK elites.

Once the queue made its way on board and the greeting FA saw our First Class boarding passes, the excellent personalized service began in earnest.

I declined the pre-departure Dom and the arabic coffee and dates. With a short taxi and little other traffic in front of us we were at the top of runway 19 awaiting clearance.

Great plane spotting as we made the turn.

And my vote for the most colourful livery in a long time...

My favorite terminal in any airport, except for FRA.

More "informal" housing.

Great views of the coast on the climb out.

Cape Point and the Cape of Good Hope.

As with most return flights, time to start the drying out process... with a Diet Coke or Coke Light depending on where you are in the world.

Today's menu.

And the wine list.

Showtime!

I started with the pleasant fresh salad, although "dressing of my choice" today was limited to oil and vinegar, or not.

For my main, I went with the delicious Mango Chicken, chicken filled with mango and chili chutney, served with baby carrots, spinach, pine nuts and mashed sweet potatoes.

Dessert was the banana cheesecake, served with passion fruit coulis and caramelized banana.

Watched a couple of movies before sleeping under the stars. But not before a United alert of yet another delay on a flight that we had originally intended to take. Thanks for the reminder to cancel.

With just over 90 minutes to go, I had a couple of the Light Bites. I only ordered two things, but wound up with more.

Creamy seafood vol-au-vent and the sundries tomato and feta quiche.

And the Vakitori chicken skewers.

Our approach to DXB.

And long taxi.

Looks like the old bus gate again.

And the line-up of buses.

And the lovely First Class bus, which fortunately dropped us at the B1 bus gates. Good news as our JFK flight departs from B13.

We arrived at the FCL near B15 about 20 minutes before boarding. Stopped in for a few minutes before heading out to board.
Nice Level 4 boarding for F and J pax with an elevator down to the upper deck of the A380.

Despite the GA accepting us for boarding, the crew wasn't ready so we queue'd in the jet bridge for a few minutes. Needy New Yorker in 3A apparently required an Emirates agent to help find the plane and make sure she didn't get lost somewhere between the gate and plane.

Our same 2K and 3K as SFO-DXB. Some pics from that flight.

Not the best EK experience tonight with lots of things going wrong.

Starting with departure delays. Delay 1 was a sick passenger requiring medical staff to evaluate. Delay 2 was yet another sick passenger requiring medical evaluation. Eventually it was decided that the family would be offloaded. Of course, that led to another delay while ground crew "found their luggage". Around 3:45AM, we finally pushed back and made the long trek along taxiways to our departing runway.

And then we sat. And sat. For another 30 minutes while every other EK flight departed ahead of us.

Tonight's menu.

And wine list.

Finally, we're off for our 13 hour 50 minute flight to New York. Shortly after take-off, Showtime.

Starting with a delicious lentil soup with fried arabic bread.

For my main, I had the excellent Roast Lemon Chicken with cherry tomato and garlic ragout, mashed potatoes, seasoned carrots and courgettes.

For dessert, a lovely Quince and almond tart served warm with a rich creme anglaise and fresh berries.

After dinner, I turned my attention to the fact that with the late departure from DXB, there was a strong likelihood that we would miss our 10:55A JFK-MSP flight.
Unfortunately, the virtually free Wifi attracted a lot of users, rendering Wifi speed to something resembling a tortoise crossing the road.

How cool is this? JetSmarter showed a "Morning" 800XP from Teterboro to Chicago Executive. Since I had already pre-booked an EK limo just in case, I figured I'd just have the driver drop us at Teterboro. I booked a refundable late PM ORD-DEN AA flight while I waited for JetSmarter to confirm departure window. In the end, sadly I had to cancel since the 800XP had a wheels up window no later than 8AM, well before our arrival.

Now exhausted, I asked our FA to turn down my bed and I promptly fell asleep. Although my sleep only lasted about 3 hours... until the entire F cabin was awakened by a bunch of loud arguing drunks. Apparently, most of a family of 5 First Class pax from some third world backwater decided to drain the alcohol in the J lounge before stumbling back waking up the entire cabin. Fortunately, after a half hour or so, they all passed out in their suites and the cabin was calm again, at least for a while. The purser told me that the captain had been informed.

Now awake, I decided to shower.

Being very efficient today and using only 1/2 of my water allotment.

At around two hours out, the rid-raf awoke and starting yapping again. Most of us had had enough with these guys by now and in particular the most obnoxious one in 1K. I complained to the Purser again as did other pax. The crew did the best they could and the father of the group apologized for his son's behavior, telling another pax that "I can't control him". The purser confided that 1K had been abusive to the crew and that the captain had called ahead to have police meet us on arrival. The captain and other flight deck crew members then began regular walk-thru's of the cabin just to keep an eye on 1K.

Beginning our approach to JFK and finally some good news, our JFK-MSP is delayed an hour. Yay, so we won't miss the flight.

To Emirates' Gate 6.

Once at the gate, the captain announced that there were be a delay "for a security issue". LOL. Meanwhile, 1K is now in 4K with his son, oblivious to the world.

Oops. Welcome to America, Port Authority Police style.

Hey man, what did I do? I did hear him tell the cop that "I only had 3 drinks". Good one.

After 3 minutes or so, Port Authority police escorted him off the plane. And surrounded him just off the jet bridge. Welcome to New York. Enjoy your stay.

Global Entry was our friend today as Mrs. SFO finally got a clean no-X receipt and we were out in no time. With Delta operating from Terminal 4, we were at gate a few minutes before the start of boarding.

Lunch

The good news is we made the flight. The bad news: more trailer trash, this time midwest style. Definitely a Bose flight. Seems like Billy Bob wanted everyone to know how loud he could talk and impress his seat-mate, for 3 freaking hours. One of his pearls included how he can actually text people (including his mom) from his phone. I kid you not. Even the FA's were rolling their eyes.

Fashion, Billy Bob style.

With AA's catering demise, DL is now serving the "least worst" meals in the domestic skies. Today, a choice of ham and cheese on a baguette, or chicken parm salad.

Mrs. SFO had the ham & cheese which rated an "it's OK".

My chicken salad was pretty tasty and unlike AA and UA "chicken" meals, actually featured real chicken. Wow, what a concept.

And AA international First Class salt and pepper shakers.

The the always delicious Dancing Deer chocolate chip cookies.

For those that know MSP, the furthest gate from the runway is G21 which is exactly where we headed today. Naturally, our connecting gate was the complete opposite side of the terminal, at C2. Nevertheless, with the help of the air train/tram, we made the trek in 8 minutes and made our connection.

Refreshments

Finally, an uneventful flight and we arrived home on time.

Thanks all so much for following this report and for all of your comments.
Cape Town and the Cape Winelands are simply spectacular.
We enjoyed our trip immensely and cannot wait to return.
