FRA Lufthansa First Class Terminal

FRA Lufthansa First Class Terminal
December 2014

Our limo driver dropped us off at the Terminal A entrance, where amazingly we were the only people at passport control.  Two minutes later we were outside A-1, turned left for the short walk to the First Class Terminal... our home for afternoon, and unexpectedly the evening.

I set up shop in our usual corner seats and started to pass the time for 4 hours and our 4:25P departure.

While Mrs. SFO headed for one of the two day rooms to catch up on sleep.

This in not looking good.

Oh well, what can I do expect enjoy this amazing lounge, decked out in beautiful Christmas decorations.

And the latest gummy bear display.

The wonderful Cigar Lounge.

Meanwhile back outside, it's still coming down.

We've outlasted all but one other party.  Everything looks good.

Uh-oh, not so fast.

Our PA Sonya stopped by to give me the bad news.  The 4:25P is cancelled and the 9:15P is oversold.  But we are confirmed on tomorrow morning's 7:30A flight.  And she gives us a voucher for the night at Airport Sheraton.  Did we want to standby for the 9:15P?  Absolument.  And the good part is that if we clear, the gate will call the FCT and only then will our limo take us to the plane.   I give Mrs. SFO the good news and other than missing our friends and dinner in Eze, we're remarkably calm.  There are worse places to pass the time.  And with lots of time, let's have dinner.

Our PA Sonya stopped by to tell us that the 9:15P flight was now cancelled as well.   At this point, we're thinking let's just stay here and go in the morning and arrive fresh.  Plus Avis in Nice closes at midnight and it would be really tight.

We both had the sensational Linguini con gamberetti.  Phenomenal.

And naturally the Wiener Schnitzel. OMG.

Time for dessert.  Decisions, decisions.

The warm apple strudel with creme anglaise and chocolate was to die for.

Just as we finishing dinner, our new PA Stephan came over to inform us that the 9:15PM flight was now back on the schedule... provided the inbound arrives from Hamburg.  OK, let us know. Danke.  We returned to our lounge seating area to wait it out a while when I struck up a conversation with a fascinating German-Saudi gentleman who is apparently one of the original HON Circle members and seemingly knows every FCT employee.   The kitchen makes special "off the menu" items for him and he convinced me to try the Kaiser 'schmarn.  Wow. Wow.

At 7:30P, after nearly 7 hours in the FCT and our inbound plane still on the ground in Hamburg, we decided to call it a night and head for the Sheraton.  We bid adieu to our new German-Saudi friend and head out to the waiting Lufthansa van which took us over to the Sheraton.

And the longest line for check-in I have ever seen at any hotel.  Apparently, there were lots of flights cancelled tonight.

And our digs for the night.  Not exactly the French Riviera.

February 2014

Two minutes to get outside and four minutes to the FCT, a lot faster than trying to navigate around the crazy labyrinth that is FRA and find a lounge.

Note: File pic from another visit, hence the leaves.   First stop was breakfast.

But then ten minutes later, lunch was available.  Ah, what the heck.

The chicken tikka masala was sensational.  I should have just continued to eat and forget about eating on our flight.

After lunch, nap-time for Mrs. SFO.

I set up in one of the computer/quiet rooms, organize our TaxFree receipts and ask for our PA (aka Broom Hilda) to summon the Zoll/Customs crew and yes I realize it will cost me 75€.

And this is when our day with Lufthansa turned south quickly.  Broom Hilda first insisted that since we only had carry-ons, customs wouldn't come since I could "pass the goods to someone who was not departing on an international flight".  I kid you not.  When I informed her that we never check luggage and I have done this drill before, she insisted I was wrong.

She then suggested that Mrs. SFO and I leave and go to the First Class Lounge in the B terminal, "which by the way is more convenient than walking to the Terminal".  By that point, I'd pretty much had it with her.  My response was along the lines of "My wife is sleeping, there is no way we are schlepping over to another terminal because you don't know the drill.  Find someone that knows how the system works here."

Three minutes later she return to inform me that "Vee are both right". Huh? "The policy is as I thought, but it is not followed in the First Class Terminal.  Customs makes an exception for customers in the First Class Terminal.  I guess that is what the 75 euro fee is for."  Duh!  OMG. And ten minutes later, the Zoll agents show up and routinely stamp the TaxFree forms.  I pay Broom Hilda the 75€.

Now you would think that this would have been the end of it... but no.  Broom Hilda once again tries to discourage us from coming to the First Class Terminal.  "Next time, just go to the First Class Lounge in the B terminal.  It is more convenient and they drive also you to your plane".  Whatever.

Mercifully, I don't see her for another 40 minutes.  At about T-25, Broom Hilda returns to inform us that "it is time to go".

February 2014

After a long walk from the gate to passport control, we exited the terminal, turned left for the short walk to the First Class Terminal.

We headed for our favorite seating area.

Pics from another trip.

At T-25, our PA retrieved us for our van ride to our gate... Carpool with 3 other CDG pax this morning, not quite as nice as the usual private S class ride.
