48 hour First Class Round the World

48 hour First Class Round the World
First Class Round the World in 48 hours
via Cathay Pacific and JAL A350 First Class
November 2024

Off to... nowhere

I've done a lot of round the world trips over the years, but none in under 48 hours as I’m doing this week. The catalyst was finding an 80,000 American miles JAL First Class award HND-JFK on their amazing new A351. So how do I get there? Luckily, Cathay Pacific had a single First Class seat from London to Haneda via Hong Kong on the day I needed. Then American released a 72,000 miles First Class award seat from Denver to London via DFW to complete the trip. American's International First Class is not very good and indeed they are eliminating it in the next 12 months. In many ways, they’ve already given up on international First Class.   But at 72,000 AA miles, a reasonable price to pay for getting to London especially being able to have lunch at DFW Flagship First Dining.

First up is Denver to DFW, on very quiet 6am at DIA.

Over to the C concourse and the very nice new Admirals Club.

Beautiful sunrise.

Upgraded food options from the last time I was here.

Very nice quiet area.

This was quite tasty.

At T-40, I head over to my gate.

Snack basket breakfast.

We arrived DFW on time in the B terminal and one train stop later I was in D.

American Flagship Lounge and Flagship First Dining

With my ontime arrival from Denver, I had nearly 4 hours before my flight to London.   Off to AA's Flagship Lounge.

The main Business Class dining room.

Rub it in that I'm not flying you today.  lol

Just after noon, I headed for lunch at the best part of American... Flagship First Dining, reserved for AA and BA First Class passengers.

Very nice and very un-AA wine list.

And today's menu.

Not on the wine list as it was just added.  Very nice.

Amuse-bouche

OMG, bread was divine.

My starter... Harissa Lamb Meatballs.  Whoa was that spicy good.

Moving on to a great Oregon Pinot.

With my Signature Flagship Burger.

So good, so decadent.

Wonderful deconstructed cheese cake.

And a decaf Irish Coffee to finish a really great meal.

What a wonderful Flagship First Dining experience.  Great food, drink and exceptional service.  Hard to believe that this is American Airlines.

American Airlines First Class Dallas to London

At T-50, I headed downstairs to the gate.

As usual, my AA First seat is totally occupied.  No idea why they keep doing this.

Much better after I tossed everything in the overhead bin.

Yeah it's old and dated, but still quite comfortable.  And the seat swivels which is cool.

Yeah, we're not spending much on the amenity kit.

Today's menu...

And joke of the day, the most pathetic "First Class" wine list anywhere.  After the mediocre champage, a selection of cheap swill from around the world... a $15 a bottle average at best.  Clearly, AA has stopped trying.

On our way.

Showtime, AA First style.   A good crew can make or break a flight, and today's AA crew was outstanding especially purser Tim.

My wine selection today.  LOL

AA's starter.  Yikes.  Bag of greens and some fruit.

With a little bit of lobster, which was tasty for as much as there was.

Classic Beer Cheese soup.  Who thinks up this stuff?

For my main, I had pre-ordered the Soy Ginger Short Rib.

The best part of the meal, although I only nibbled at it as I was stuffed from lunch.

Purser Tim proactively offered to make my bed for me.

Beautiful morning on approach to Heathrow.

On time arrival and then the long, long, long trek thru the bowels of T3.

All in all, a pleasant day with American, and much better than I had anticipated.  Thank you to purser Tim for making it an excellent flight to London.

Lounge Hopping at miserable 3rd world London Heathrow

The long, long walk from my arriving AA flight.

After the usual miserable LHR security gong show, the lovely T3 departure area.

Fortunately, lots of lounge options...

Let's start with the Qantas Lounge.

Maybe later in the day this place is nice, but no redeeming features at 8am.

After 5 minutes, let's try the American First Class Lounge.

Packed... and miserable.

Ugh.  That's the American we all know.  lol

And the best for last, the Cathay Pacific Lounge.

First Class Lounge dining,

Small but efficient showers.

Cathay Pacific First Class London to Hong Kong

At around T-45, a Cathay representative came by and retreived me and two other First Class passengers and escorted us downstairs to our waiting buggy.

Off to our gate...

Which today is a bus gate.

The first bus was for Business and First passengers.

I actually don't mind the bus gates as you really get an up close and personal avgeek view.

Sure it's a dated product, but I still love it.

Kudos to Cathay for offering the good stuff on the ground.

Taxiing out for take off.

In the air, more Krug and today's amuse bouche, a one taste and done.

Today's menu.  Distinctly unimpressive and a far cry from pre-Covid, pre-China glory days of Cathay First.

And respectable wine list... a far cry from the pathetic cheap swill list on American.

And a featured Chinese Cab... this was excellent.

Showtime, Cathay First style.

Meh.

This was borderline inedible.

Chinese chicken dish was tasty but not very First Class.

On the other hand, both reds were excellent.

Winner, winner...

Bedtime for 5 or so hours...

Some 7 hours later, round 2.

The grilled cheese sandwich was delicious.

And the yummy crab and prawn egg noodle soup.

Beginning our descent into HKG.

Despite the obvious bean counter food cutbacks, still a most pleasant flight with a wonderful cabin crew.

Cathay Pacific First Class Hong Kong to Tokyo Haneda

After a wonderful 13 hours in Cathay First from London, back to reality with a not so First Class connection experience in Hong Kong. Long walk and lengthy queue for transit doc check and security and then a long, long walk to seemingly the end of the earth, aka Gate 1.

Just lovely.

Finally in the beautful HKG concourse.

And the long, long, long walk to Gate 1.

Just another mile or so.  LOL

But once on board, all is well with wonderful service to Tokyo.

OK, all is really well now.

Some excellent plane spotting on our taxi out.

Shortly after take-off, Showtime Cathay First style...

Another sweet note.

Though not impressed with breakfast only options since for many connecting passengers, it is not breakfast time. Clearly we’re not Emirates. Lol

But breakfast was tasty.

Getting my exercise today.  The long, long trek to Transit security where remarkable I was the only passenger.

My Instagram video of my Hong Kong to Tokyo Cathay experience

Connecting at Tokyo Haneda

Lots of exercise today...

Once in the terminal, I headed to the passport control offices in 2nd attempt to get my Japan Trusted Traveller status.    The first time in May all of their computers were down so they couldn't process me.

After 20 minutes... no better luck this time as the rules supposedly changed and now I needed two Japan entries in the previous 6 months intead of 12 months.   So I'm SOL and will just have to suck it up and endure the queue for any future Japan entries.

With 4+ hours to kill...

Off to the distinctly mediocre JAL First Class Lounge.

First stop was a much needed shower...

Then exploring the lounge.

Interesting theme rooms with some cool memorabilia

Food offering in what is supposedly a First Class lounge.

I tried the signature beef curry which was watery and inedible.

Also inedible.

Off to try Sushi Tsurutei which gets rave reviews...

Only to find it closed.  But of course, only open between 7am and 11am.  LOL

So I retreated upstairs to empty Salon.  Apparently not many passengers know about this.

Pleasant staff eager to please.

By this time, I'm starting to fade and can't wait to board my JAL First flight to JFK.

Japan Airlines A350 First Class to JFK

What a treat to be back in JAL First Class and their brand new A350-1000 to New York JFK, featuring extraordinary new Suites, one of the largest First Class suites in the skies. Excellent service today by a wonderful and pampering cabin crew. From Tokyo, JAL raises the champagne bar with a beautiful 2013 Salon. Retailing for $1,200 a bottle, the 2013 Salon is the most extravagant champagnes in the skies. An amazing deal at only 80,000 AA miles.

Once again, no priority boarding for First Class as we're just lumped in 30 or 40 One World elites.

And of course, why use door 1L for First?

But on board, all is well back in this gorgeous 6 suite First Class cabin with massive suite footprint.

Predeparture champagne?  LOL.  No thanks, I'll wait for the good stuff.

Interesting tape repair on the counter.  Apparently a piece cracked and fell off on the inbound.

Cool pad controls.

And massive HD screen.

Same problem as 6 months ago... Can't get rid of Chinese subtitles on most movies.

Once in the air, the good stuff.  And the good news is that JAL now loads two bottle per flight, and except for one glass for someone else, I was the only one drinking champagne today and had virtually the entire bottle to myself before nap time, and then half a bottle after.

Yummy amuse bouche plate.

Showtime JAL First style.

Today's menu...

And beverage list.  Great champagne.

With mediocre wines.  But as long as there is Salon, pretty much irrelevant.

Delicious Washoku dinner...

It may have been the Salon, but I completely forgot to take pics of the Simmered platter.  Suffice it to say, the wagyu tongue dish was a one and done.

Time for a nap in one of the most comfy beds in the sky.

But first, a little nightcap.

Some 6 hours later...

Showtime, part 2.

OMG, on to the 2nd bottle.

Outstanding Japanese Brochettes and the best omelette ever!

And JAL's Special Yuzu-Flavored Chinese Noodles.

But the show stopper was Dear Butter Sand.

Wow.

Amazing HD quality.

Cool tail cam view of our approach and landing at JFK.

What a spectacular 13 hour JAL First flight.  Beautiful and comfy A350 First Class cabin, outstanding food and fabulous champage, and flawless service from a wonderful cabin crew.

jetblue Even More Space Economy JFK to Denver

After another long, long trek thru the depressing dungeon like tunnel of T8, I was out of CBP is no time, heading for the AirTrain for the short ride to T5.   It's jetblue tonight since Delta canceled their 8pm Saturday DEN flight and moved me to their 4:30pm departure... only 2 hours before my JAL flight landed.  lol

JFK was a breeze tonight... only 37 minutes from the door opening at Terminal 8 Gate 2 to my jetblue gate.

I recently status matched to Mosaic which game me free Even More Space seats.  And just to be safe, I bought an Extra seat so I'd be as comfy as possible.

My home for the next 4 hours... seats 3A and 3C

Lots of leg room, probably more leg room than Delta First.

Cool seat back IFE including iphone pairing, although not sure what the benefit was.

Apparently complimentary food for Mosaics, as I was not charged.

All in all, reasonable comfortable 4 hours for Economy.   And an early arrival at close in gate A37 means I avoid the train and walk across the bridge.   What a fun, crazy trip.  Thanks for following along.
